Microsoft PowerPoint has a system of toolbars which allow the user to quickly access a function or command with a click of the mouse. One of these toolbars is called the "Standard Toolbar." The standard toolbar contains the most basic of the presentation commands. Directions for using the most common, standard toolbar buttons are outlined below.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003
Step1
Start Microsoft PowerPoint. Open a new, blank document or open an existing PowerPoint presentation from your files. Locate the "Standard toolbar" located just under the menus at the top of the screen.
Step2
Click the "New" button on the standard toolbar to start a new, blank PowerPoint presentation. Click the "Open" button to open an existing PowerPoint presentation from your files. Click the "Save" button to save your new or existing PowerPoint presentation. The "New" button is the button that is a blank sheet of paper, the "Open" button is the open file folder, and the "Save" button is a picture of floppy disk.
Step3
Use your mouse to click the "Email" button to quickly open an email and attach the PowerPoint presentation to the email. This button has a picture of an envelope and a paper clip on it.
Step4
Activate the "Print" and "Print Preview" buttons by clicking on them with your mouse. The "Print" button, which has a picture of a printer on it, will print your presentation. The "Print Preview" button, which has a picture of a piece of paper with a magnifying glass, will take you to print preview mode where you can view the document how it will be printed.
Step5
Open the "Spelling" tool by clicking the "Spelling" button, which is a check mark with the letters "ABC" above the check mark.
Step6
Apply standard formatting options to your presentation by using the "Cut," "Copy," "Paste," "Undo" and "Redo" buttons. The "Cut" button (the button with a pair of scissors) cuts a selection of the presentation onto the clipboard while the "Copy" button copies the information to the clipboard. The "Paste" button will paste anything that is on the clipboard onto your presentation. "Undo," which is a backwards arrow, will undo the last action. "Redo," the picture of the forward-facing arrow, will redo the last action you made.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't see the "Standard toolbar," choose the "Window" menu and click on "Standard" to bring it up.
  • Consult the Microsoft PowerPoint Help System to learn how to use all of the buttons contained on the "Standard toolbar".
