You can make an old pair of jeans into a jean skirt in a short amount of time. This is a great project for beginners. You can leave the edges frayed for an ultra-casual look, or you can stitch the hem for a more finished look.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Rip open the inner legs of the jeans carefully with the seam ripper. Open the center front seam to the lower end of the fly front. Open the back center seam to within 5 inches of the waist.

  2. Step 2

Lay the jeans on a flat surface. Lap one side of the front over the other. Make sure the fly front is flat. As you pin the seam in place, tuck under the raw edge. Don't worry if the legs don't meet at this time.

  3. Step 3

Repeat Step 2 for the back seam. When complete the jeans should be an A-line shape.

  4. Step 4

Try on the skirt. Adjust for flare at this time by moving the crotch seams as necessary. Re-pin as needed. Measure the length of the desired skirt. If you plan to hem the jean skirt, allow 1 inch for the hem.

  5. Step 5

Stitch the front and back seams in place. Stitch again ¼ inch from first row of stitching.

  6. Step 6

Cut off excess jeans at the line you marked for the hem. Place a flat piece of leg material into the V-shape on the front of the skirt. Pin in place. Sew along leg line. Sew again ¼ inch from first stitching. Complete the back of the jean skirt in the same manner.

  7. Step 7

Pin and hem the jean skirt, or stitch ¼ inch from bottom edge and allow skirt to fray.
