How to Do the Henry Backheel Flick in Soccer

This clever soccer trick is a cool way to start juggling or a way to flick the ball over your opponent during a game. It was pioneered by the great French player Thierry Henry, and first appeared in one of the commercials he did for Nike. The most challenging part of the trick is the easiest to practice, so you should be able to get it down in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the ball in front of you on the ground.

    • 2

Place your right foot on top of the ball and get used to the feeling of moving the sole of your shoe back and forth across its surface. Try to feel the friction created between the ball and your shoe by pressing down on it.

    • 3

Push your foot forward quickly and brush the top of the ball with the bottom of your heel. Speed is the most important thing on which to focus, but remember to keep the ball under control. Always be mindful of where it is on your foot and where it's moving.

    • 4

Plant your foot on the ground in front of the ball. The ball should be rolling forward from when you brushed it with your heel, and you want to pop it into the air off of the back of your foot.

    • 5

Allow the ball to rise up to the height of your calf, then flick it over your head with the back of your heel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work toward executing the brush, plant and flick in one seamless motion. Henry does it while jogging forward, so the move should feel more natural if you can do it in stride.
