Step 1
Use a fade-out marker or transfer method to create the needlework design on the fabric. Work carefully when using a pencil to draw the design. Pounce the design onto darker fabrics. Draw or pounce parallel lines as guides for the herringbone stitch.
-
Step 2
Stretch the fabric taut over an embroidery hoop. Attach larger pieces to a frame. Make sure the grain of the fabric is straight and smooth.
-
Step 3
Lay the foundation row for the herringbone stitch. Stitch the left arm of each X, working left to right across the row. Leave space between each one equal to the width of the X. Continue to the end of the row.
-
Step 4
Reverse direction and add the right arm to complete each X. Continue to the end of the row. Stitch a second row in the same manner but aligning the Xs with the spaces in the row above.
-
Step 5
Use the same or a contrasting color, work a row of Xs into the spaces in the top and bottom rows. Weave the second thread under the thread of the first color when moving between the top and bottom rows.
-
Step 6
Weave the end of the thread under a few stitches. Trim loose thread ends on the backside of the work.
