The fly stitch is comprised of a V-shaped loop that is then anchored with a vertical straight stitch. Known as the open loop and "Y" stitch, the fly stitch has many variations including the closed, open, whipped and reversed. The fly stitch is perfect for creating a border and is popular in crazy quilting. Read on to learn how to stitch a fly stitch.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Trace the design for the needlework onto the fabric. Place the fabric into an embroidery hoop and tighten. Keep the grain smooth, the design straight and the fabric taut.

  2. Step 2

Designate the line along which the fly stitch is to be worked. Bring the needle through the fabric at the top and just to the left of the line.

  3. Step 3

Hold down the thread with the thumb and insert the needle along the same line just to the right of where it first came through the fabric. Make a small stitch down and towards the center. Wrap the thread under the needle and make a small loop.

  4. Step 4

Finish the row of stitches by running the tail of the thread under the completed stitches on the backside of the work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't knot the thread as you begin. Hold the tail of the thread on the backside of the fabric and then secure it with the first few stitches.
  • When needlework is complete, don't use a knot to secure it. It can show through the front of the finished needlework.
