Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Select yarn in any color or type. Fuzzy yarn may need larger needles to work comfortably with. Beginners should choose a smooth yarn to work with.

  2. Step 2

Choose the knitting needle size. The needles can be plastic, wood or metal. Choose a size and type that is comfortable to work with and will give the gauage that is desired.

  3. Step 3

Pick the stitch pattern to work with. Common stitches for headbands include stockinet, reverse stockinet and garter. Advanced knitters can experiment with patterns such as basket weave and diamond. Colors can be alternated in rows and patterns as well.

  4. Step 4

Cast on the first row of stitches. Determine the number of stitches needed to achieve the desired width. Keep in mind that the headband will be stretched and the width will vary as a result.

  5. Step 5

Continue to stitch until the headband reaches approximately twenty inches when stretched. Use a human head to determine the length of the headband. Shorten the length for a child's head.

  6. Step 6

Cast off and bind the final stitches.

  7. Step 7

Sew or knit the ends together using a yarn needle to complete the headband circle. The headband can also be sewed together using a sewing machine.
