How to Tour Washington and Lee University

Washington and Lee University is a private undergraduate liberal arts university located in Lexington, Virginia. This highly selective university recommends that all prospective and interested students visit the Washington and Lee campus prior to deciding to attend the university. Here is how you can tour and visit Washington and Lee University.

      Select the date you want to visit and tour Washington and Lee University. You can visit the campus year round. hHwever, the admissions office recommends that you visit when students are on campus. Check the Washington and Lee master calendar online to determine when the university is open and when students will be around.

      Register for a group information session for your visit to Washington and Lee. Group information sessions are one hour in length and available from September through May. During the information session, you'll learn about the university and also have the opportunity to ask questions. Call the admissions office at (540) 458-8710, to find out the information session schedule. You can also reserve your place at one of the sessions by telephone.

      Decide to go on a tour of the Washington and Lee University campus. Tours take one hour and are led by a current Washington and Lee student. They depart from the Gilliam Admissions House on campus Monday through Friday throughout the year and on most Saturdays when students are on campus. Reservations for a tour aren't required, but you should call the admissions office to check for tour availability. The Washington and Lee website also has a schedule of tour times.

      Schedule an interview for when you will be on the Washington and Lee University campus. Interviews aren't required for admission to the university, but they are highly recommended. The university gives interviews on campus Monday through Friday from June through August, as well as Monday through Saturday from September through December and also in May.

      Reserve overnight accommodations prior to your visit to Washington and Lee University. The admissions section on the Washington and Lee University website has a listing of hotels and other accommodations in Lexington. The website also gives contact information and a brief description of many of the accommodation choices.

      Plan out your travels to the Washington and Lee campus. Driving directions, flight information and Amtrak train schedules to Lexington are listed on the university's website. There is also a link to a map of the Lexington area.

  • The admissions office recommends that you interview between May of your junior year in high school and December of your senior year.

  • You must schedule an interview by telephoning the admissions office. It's recommended to schedule your interview several weeks in advance.
