Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Line up in a wide-out position at wide receiver. Split ends may also run this route. The receiver should be on the line of scrimmage and not set back off the line in a slot or flanker position.

  2. Step 2

Stand with the outside leg forward and ready to spring off the line at the snap, with your body leaning forward.

  3. Step 3

Push off your outside foot at the snap and run in a slant toward the middle of the field, about 10 yards down field. Run between the zones in zone coverage and away from coverage in man-to-man coverage.

  4. Step 4

Keep your body between the defender and the ball, so that you are the only one who can catch the ball. Force the defender to move through you to get to the ball, which would result in a defensive interference penalty.

  5. Step 5

Look for the ball at the specified location. The quarterback takes a short three-step drop for a slant route and throws to a spot where he expects the receive to run to. Often he will release the ball before the receive has to time to look for it.

  6. Step 6

Get ready to get hit by the free safety. You should be behind the linebackers and in front of the free safety when you catch the ball. Usually, the result is a hard hit by the safety. Receiver must hang onto the ball after the hit.
