Step 1
Line up in a wide-out position at wide receiver. Split ends may also run this route. The idea is to get away from the congestion in the middle of the field to free yourself up for a deep run.
-
Step 2
Dodge or otherwise fight off any bumps at the line by the defender. The post route is a timing route between the quarterback and receiver, so you can't afford to spend much time struggling to get down field. Free yourself up in a hurry.
-
Step 3
Go about 15 yards down field, then cut in at an angle towards the goal post. Try to fake the defend toward the outside by feigning a move to the sideline just before cutting inside. If the defender bites on this move, you will have the inside position to the ball, and the defender will have to reach over you to prevent a reception.
-
Step 4
Look for the ball to be thrown abut the time you make your cut toward the goal post.
-
Step 5
Run to the spot where you should be. The quarterback will take a five-step drop before throwing down field and will throw to a spot where he expects the receiver to run to. Don't stop running toward the ball.
-
Step 6
Expect to get hit. A receiver running into the middle of the field becomes a target of either safety. You must keep your eye on the ball even if you expect to take a hit.
