How to Use Veritas Cluster Server

Veritas Cluster Server is the ideal solution if your computer system needs high availability cluster. This cluster will allow for fail over in case a single system actually goes down. This is where Veritas Cluster Server shines. It will allow your software to continuously run while a single computer crashes. Read on to learn how to use Veritas Cluster Server.

Instructions

    • 1

Install Veritas Cluster Server software onto the primary and secondary server. Veritas Cluster Server is compatible with Unix, Linux and Windows Operating Systems.

    • 2

Confirm if you have a valid license installed. Running the vxlicense -p command will show the current state of your license.

    • 3

Decide which computer server will be the primary server. The other computer system will act as a standby server. Veritas Cluster Server will not have both the primary and standby server running. It will quickly perform a hot swap once the primary server becomes unavailable.

    • 4

Examine the log file for errors. The default location for the log file is /var/VRTSvcs/log. There may be several files located in this directory if you have multiple Veritas products installed on the system.

    • 5

Examine the cluster configuration file for accuracy. This file is located in /etc/VRTSvcs/conf/config/main.cf. Modify this file whenever a new server is added to the cluster.

    • 6

Perform a fail over test on your application. This could be accomplished by shutting down the primary server. Once the primary server is turn off, verify that the backup server in the cluster continues to run the application with minimal downtime.

    • 7

Power up the primary server. Once that is up, power down the secondary server. Veritas Cluster Server should move the application back over to the primary server.

    • 8

Bring the secondary server back up. Verify the Veritas log files for any usual errors during the fail over testing.
