Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact the VPN administrator at your organization. This individual will give you an authorized account to connect to the VPN.

  2. Step 2

Write down the connection information in a safe place. If any passwords are provided, do not write them down. Passwords should always be memorized. If in the event you forget your password, then your VPN administrator could always give you a new password.

  3. Step 3

Install a secure client software on your computer. This software will allow you to connect to the VPN easily. There are several choices depending upon your operating system.

  4. Step 4

Configure the VPN software client. You need to enter an IP address of the VPN network. This IP address must be entered correctly for the VPN to work properly. Consult you VPN administer for this IP address.

  5. Step 5

Establish your authentication connection scheme. The three most common choices are Username and password, SecurID or Certificate. Your VPN will only accept one type of authentication.

  6. Step 6

Connect to your VPN using your VPN software. If the connection is successful, then you are done with your configuration. If the connection is unsuccessful, double check your settings. If your settings appear correct, then consult your VPN administrator.

  7. Step 7

Perform work over the VPN. This VPN connection will allow you to access any files that live inside the VPN. Also, your VPN may give you access to servers that live inside the VPN.
