Step 1
Prepare to play by spending an evening or two at the driving range. Choose an outfit that's tasteful and conservative, and be sure to wear a shirt that has a collar. Clean your clubs and shoes. Familiarize yourself with the course if you've never played it, and make sure you know how to get there.
-
Step 2
Arrive early, and plan to spend a few minutes warming up on the driving range. Greet your boss as you would normally. If you haven't been invited to call him by his first name, don't assume because you're doing something social means you can start being more familiar with him.
-
Step 3
Follow his lead when it comes to conversation. Your boss may want to talk business, or may just want to get to know you better. Brush up on current events in the news to be ready for any sort of conversation that may come up, but do your best to steer clear of anything controversial.
-
Step 4
Obey the rules of etiquette for golf. Replace your divots, don't walk in the path of someone's putt on the green, and drive the golf cart considerately and safely. Consideration should be given to others on the course at all times.
-
Step 5
Be a good sport. The last thing you need to show your boss is any impatience you may feel about your own performance on the course. Swearing and throwing your clubs after a bad shot is an absolute no-no. Win or lose with grace and the utmost of good sportsmanship especially when you play golf with your boss.
-
Step 6
Enjoy a beer after your round if your boss extends the invitation. But drinking too much could lead to leaving the boss with a very bad impression, so know your limits.
