The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, commonly called EFTPS, is a website maintained by the U.S. Government as a vehicle for taxpayers to make federal tax payments online. You can sign up for the user friendly EFTPS system in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

Get your information together. You will need your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). For businesses, this is the Employer Identification number (EIN). Individuals can use their Social Security number (SSN). You must also have your bank or credit union account number and type (checking or savings) as well as the institution's routing number. (The routing number is a 9 digit number located on the lower left of your checks).

    • 2

Go to the EFTPS website. (See our Resources section). Click on the Enrollment tab to sign up to pay taxes online. You can sign up as a business or an individual taxpayer; whichever applies to your tax payments.

    • 3

Choose "Get an Internet Password" to select your own personal pass code.

    • 4

Return to the main enrollment page and click "Next." Provide individual or business contact information.

    • 5

Complete the application. Wait for a confirmation and 4 digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) number to arrive via USPS. This process takes 2 to 4 weeks. You can use EFTPS to pay taxes online as soon as you receive your assigned PIN.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add a secondary Enrollment in order to pay taxes online from more than one bank account.

  • Safeguard your personal identification number and password. Never hand them out unless absolutely necessary. Don't store them on your computer. Coupled with your SSN or EIN, these numbers enable anyone to access your EFTPS account.
