The addict will face these temptations all over again. However, one can benefit from rehab so that relapse becomes minimal, and a new and better life can be forged. Follow these basic steps to help anyone benefit from rehab.

Stay in communication with your treatment specialists. Find a way to communicate with your family and friends about your progress and ask for their support.

Read all pertinent materials having to do with your situation. Take time out of every day to read, write, and reflect on your emotional state during the rehab process.

Educate yourself fully on your condition, whether it be a physical impairment, alcohol or drug addiction, sexual addiction, etc. Talk with a peer in the same situation as yours to help normalize your problem and develop a sense of camaraderie.

Be aware of the possibilities of relapse, codependency, and depression after leaving behind an addiction or illness. Keep your family and friends well informed on the process and how to best deal with issues like these as they arise.

Keep a log or journal of your time in recovery. Refer back to this journal when relapse occurs, or you feel it is probable. This re-reading will help put some perspective on your work so far and possibly keep you from relapsing.
