How to Learn Taiko Drumming

Taiko drumming has been in Japanese culture for many centuries. Taiko means "fat drum." Taiko drums produce deep, rich sounds which reverberate for miles. They used to be used for war and communication, but today they're used in performance. Follow these steps to learn taiko drumming.

1. Look online to see if there are any taiko drumming groups in your area. Call or email them for more information.

2. Find out if there is a local chapter of the Japan America Society in your area and ask if they might know of any taiko drumming groups. Maybe they can put you in touch with someone who would know more about this art.

3. Peruse your telephone directory, if you don't have computer access. Look up "drums" and see if you can find taiko drums listed. If you don't see any drumming groups listed, try calling a drum store and asking them if they know of any in the area.

4. Arrange to attend a performance or practice of a taiko drumming group. Note that many taiko drumming performances are scheduled at public libraries or outdoor festivals, where they may perform free of charge. Afterward, decide if you're still interested to learn taiko drumming.

5. Realize that taiko drumming is physically demanding and invigorating. You should be in good physical condition to learn it.

6. Acknowledge that taiko drumming is a highly emotional experience. During a performance or while playing you may be overcome with strong emotions and start to cry.
