How to Observe the Day of Arafat
Muslims all over the world observe the Day of Arafat on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul-Hajj. During this month thousands of Muslims all over the world travel to Mecca, Saudi Arabia to take part in the annual pilgrimage known as hajj. The Day of Arafat takes place on the second day of the pilgrimage. Read on to learn more.

Prepare for the pilgrimage. The pilgrims travel from Mecca to Mina. They spend the entire day and night praying and reading the Qur'an.

Travel to the plain of Arafat. At dawn on the second day of the pilgrimage, the pilgrims travel from Mina to the plain of Arafat where they will have reached their destination. According to Islamic religion, The plain of Arafat is where the Prophet Muhammad gave his infamous Farewell Sermon before he died. Muslims all over the world not participating in this religious rite observe the Day of Arafat in religious devotion and fasting.

Stand in supplication and prayer. From dawn until sunset that day, the pilgrims spend time on Mount Arafat reciting prayers and asking for God's forgiveness and mercy from past sins.

Leave Mount Arafat at sunset and travel to an open field known as Muzdalifah. Once the pilgrims have arrived at Muzdalifah, they spend most of the night in prayer and collecting stones that will be used on the third day of the pilgrimage.
