How to Avoid Mystery Shopping Scams

Mystery shopping is a credible occupation; however, you need to be careful as you make your way into the profession. The promise of making money while shopping sounds alluring. It is often so alluring that people take the bait offered by dishonest predators, and subsequently find themselves left without money. Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent yourself from being sucked into a mystery shopping scam. Read on to find out how.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch out for companies that ask you to provide them with money up front. True mystery shopping companies pay you, and they don't take your money up front. The only exception is when you are completing a shop that requires you to make a purchase at the store or restaurant.

    • 2

Recognize that a good mystery shopping company conducts some type of screening. They'll ask questions about your skills and probably require you to provide a writing sample to check your grammar and spelling.

    • 3

Apply to mystery shopping companies that are members of The Mystery Shopper Providers Association (MSPA). Also, try to find companies that boast the sign for the Better Business Bureau (BBB) on their website. If you can't find the sign, then call the BBB and ask about the company.

    • 4

Check all mystery shopping companies for valid phone numbers and addresses.

    • 5

Go to the website for the MSPA. You'll find many companies who are legitimately looking for new shoppers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't work for a company that seeks you out through emails. This is likely a scam. True mystery shopping companies don't need to solicit.

  • Don't provide a company with your credit card numbers. Be cautious of what type of personal information you provide.

Do NOT "Apply to mystery shopping companies that are members of The Mystery Shopper Providers Association (MSPA)"! There is no such thing as a "mystery shopping association". Apply to companies on your own independently, do not pay for worthless "certifications"!
