Things You'll Need:
- Several varieties of schnapps
- Several small, clear glasses
-
Step 1
Decide on a type. There are two types of schnapps. One kind is German, or European schnapps, which has no added sugar and a higher alcohol content; as much as 80 proof (40 percent). German schnapps has been compared to vodka. The other type is American schnapps, which has sugar or other ingredients added and a lower alcohol content; usually around 40 proof (20 percent). American schnapps is more like a liqueur.
-
Step 2
Pick several schnapps for tasting. These can be of the same flavor kind, such as peach, peppermint, or apple; or compare different kinds. Assemble several clear, small glasses for tasting. Pour a small amount of each schnapps to be tested into a glass.
-
Step 3
Examine the glass. The schnapps should be clear. If there appears to be any sediment, it should vanish shortly after the schnapps is poured.
-
Step 4
Smell the aroma. Bring the glass to the nose and inhale deeply. The schnapps should smell like the base ingredient; peach schnapps should smell like peaches, peppermint like peppermint. While an alcohol smell should be present, it should not overwhelm the base, nor should it smell bitter or acidic. A woodsy smell may be apparent in some good schnapps.
-
Step 5
Take a sip. Roll the schnapps around in the mouth to get the whole mouth involved in the tasting. The schnapps should taste like the base and should not taste bitter or sour. Swallow the schnapps to evaluate the aftertaste. It should be bright and leave a lingering sensation.
