Over 30 million Americans claim Scottish descent. To highlight this heritage, Tartan Day began in the 1980s in Canada and later, the U.S. As a celebration of "all things Scottish," Tartan Day festivities are now held around the world. Tartan day is officially April 6 in the United States. Use these steps to celebrate Tartan Day.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Find festivities. Many local Celtic associations, churches and bagpipe bands plan events to honor Tartan Day. Crafts, competition, and Highland games, such as tossing the caber, are scheduled. Check local community calendars for Tartan Day celebrations.
Step2
Play golf. Golf originated in Scotland as far back as 1502. Celebrate this Scottish gift to the world by playing a round of golf on April 6. For a unique experience, play the round wearing a kilt.
Step3
Have a scotch tasting. The amber liquor is another valued export to the world. Gather friends and several bottles of scotch for a tasting party. A less expensive alternative is a tasting of Scottish ales.
Step4
Enjoy music and dancing. Either through a live bagpiper and Scottish dancers or with videos and compact disc recordings, enjoy the Scottish arts at their finest.
Step5
Eat Scottish. While not everyone might enjoy haggis, which is made of various sheep organ meats, other Scottish fare is also tasty. Consider serving scones, Cock-a-leekie soup, Dundee cake, porridge, and of course, salmon.
Step6
Throw a ceilidh. A ceilidh (pronounced "kay-lee") is the Gaelic word for party. Combine all the features into the ultimate celebration of Tartan Day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Kilts are available for rent from costume shops and on the Internet. Consider renting a kilt for Tartan Day to save money.
  • Always drink responsibly. Follow all state, federal and local laws regarding alcohol consumption.
