How to Plan an Atheist's Funeral

You want to say good-bye to your loved one with a beautiful traditional funeral but your loved one was an atheist and you want to respect that belief. Follow these tips to take religion out of the equation and plan an atheist's funeral.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a funeral home if you don't want a religious service. Decide where your loved one would have preferred to have the service.

    • 2

Keep the service spiritual instead of religious. You can include words of inspiration without including any prayers or scriptures from a particular religion.

    • 3

Include poetry. Pick a lovely piece of poetry that covers how you feel about the deceased person. You may want to include poetry written by your loved one or ask someone in your family to write a poem about the deceased.

    • 4

Let friends speak about the deceased person. You can have friends and family deliver the eulogy instead of a clergy person. Often the most touching words are said by those who loved the deceased.

    • 5

Include favorite songs instead of religious hymns. Often people play the deceased person's favorite music as people are entering the funeral home. There are many beautiful songs about love and friendship available.

    • 6

Include a moment of silence at the end of the service. People can say their own prayers or just have a reflective moment during this time.

    • 7

Have a wake for the deceased. Celebrate the life of the deceased after the service.
