Hula hooping isn't just for kids anymore. Adults have discovered the health benefits of this time-tested toy and have incorporated it into exercise. It works the core while giving your total body a cardiovascular workout. Be a kid again and try it today. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Find a hoop dance you like and buy the video. There are a few different hoop dancing videos out there so look at each one and determine if it will work for you. View them beforehand if possible by renting them from the video store or checking them out from the library.
Step2
Buy a hoop. Some videos are sold as a kit complete with the hoop while others aren't. Know what you're getting and if yours doesn't come with a hoop buy one. It should be bigger and heavier than the ones you'll find at the toy store.
Step3
Get a collapsible hoop if space is an issue. Betty Hoops sells a collapsible hoop for easy storage. It's also adjustable to accommodate different hip sizes.
Step4
Find space to hoop dance at home. You'll be swinging your hips this way and that while moving the hoop around your waist. Clear a space so you won't hit any furniture or breakables. You'll need room above your head too so watch out for ceiling fans.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hoop dancing will take some time to master. Start with a bigger hoop as you're learning so you'll have more space to work with. As you get better gradually move to smaller hoops to make your workout more difficult.
  • If you've seen the videos but still aren't sure hoop dancing is for you consider joining a class. Try it out and see if hoop dancing is right for you.
