Ashtanga Yoga is a powerful sequence of swiftly performed yoga poses practiced continually along with breathing and muscle contractions that help attain strength, flexibility and stamina. To take a class in Ashtanga yoga, it's best to do a little preparation first. Here's how to take a class in Ashtanga yoga.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a local yoga teacher that is within reasonable distance from your home or workplace. You may want to ask current students about the classes and teacher to be sure it will be a good fit for you. To find a class, do an internet search on Ashtanga yoga in your area, call your local gyms or check with directory assistance.

  2. Step 2

Check the calendar of the yoga center you wish to attend to determine the best class times that fit in with your schedule.

  3. Step 3

Contact the teacher before attending a Mysore Ashtanga yoga session for the first time. In Mysore classes, students begin practicing Ashtanga yoga poses when they arrive and move through their routines silently with the teacher aiding them in their form. Your teacher will arrange a good time for you to come so they can give you as much help as possible as a beginner.

  4. Step 4

Familiarize yourself with Ashtanga yoga terms and common practices before attending class, if you wish. Many traditional teachers use Sanskrit words when counting and describing poses, so it may be helpful to know some of them ahead of time.

  5. Step 5

Prepare yourself for a challenging workout. Ashtanga yoga is fast-paced and there are difficult moves involved, but your teacher will help ease you into it.

  6. Step 6

Bring a bottle of water and a yoga mat to class with you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some yoga centers will allow you to observe a class or take an initial beginner's class for free to see if the class is a good fit for you.
  • If you have chronic ailments, Ashtanga yoga may not be for you. You may want to try a gentler form of yoga such as Hatha yoga. Talk to your doctor and a yoga teacher in your area for guidance.
