Dorm rooms are notorious for being tiny and cramped, and when you throw in a roommate and a lot of extra junk it can mean big problems. The trick to surviving dorm life is to learn how to maximize your space to make the most of what you have. With a little creativity and a couple hundred dollars, you can make your dorm room seem a whole lot bigger. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Consider your furniture choices carefully. Instead of a twin bed, think about buying a loft bed. It will get you off the floor and leave you room underneath for a futon or a desk. For dressers and night stands, choose items that are tall and slender. They take up less square footage but still give you plenty of storage space.
Step2
Choose items that are dual purpose. A coffee table with a hidden storage compartment inside is a great idea, as is an under-bed drawer to hide your unmentionables.
Step3
Think vertically. To maximize space in your dorm room, you have to look up. Shelving and hooks are a great way to get things off the floor and out of the way. You can even hang a bike from the ceiling if you have enough wall space.
Step4
Give everything a place. A messy dorm room appears even smaller than it really is, so keep things nice and tidy by investing in some clear storage blocks or stacking baskets. If everything has a place, you'll have a lot more room to breathe in your dorm room.
