Step 1
Empty your closets. Go through every item that you're storing and ask yourself whether or not you really need to keep it. We're all guilty of hanging on to some things a little too long, from old clothing and shoes to papers and magazines. Throw away or donate the things that you never use.
-
Step 2
Sort through the contents that you plan on keeping. Make two piles--one pile of stuff will go back into the closet and the other pile will be stored somewhere else, such as in the attic. Obviously, the second pile should consist of things you rarely need, such as Christmas decorations or your old high-school yearbooks.

Step 3
Look carefully at the items you're going to put back into the closet. Visualize how those things will best fit into the closet space.
-
Step 4
Purchase plastic totes, bins or baskets to store small items. Such storage solutions are great because you're able to store similar things in one place.

Step 5
Consider installing a closet organizer. Many bedroom closets are designed in a similar fashion--a single hanging rod runs across the length of the closet with one shelf above it. By choosing the right organizer, you can complete transform the closet. Some organizers include additional shelving units, hanging rods, drawers and even slots for shoe storage. The key is to select an organizer that fits your needs.
