How to Make a PS3 LAN

LAN, short for Local Area Network, is commonly used by modern gaming devices such as the PS3 to connect multiple consoles together for multiplayer gaming. This allows for more players per game or gives players the opportunity to use their own TVs. Although PS3s cannot be connected directly, a router can be used to establish a LAN. PS3s can be connected to the router via an Ethernet cable or wirelessly if supported by the router.

Things You'll Need:

  • Router
  • Ethernet Cables

Wired

Connect an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the back of the PS3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the router.

Go to the Settings icon on the main menu. Select "Network Settings."

Go down to "Internet Connection," press "X" and select "Enabled." Go down to "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X." Select "Yes" to ignore the disconnection warning. Select "Easy" and wait for the PS3 to check the network settings.

Press "X" to save the settings. Select "Test Connection." After the test completes, the PS3 will be connected to the LAN. Repeat this process with each PS3 you want to connect to the LAN.

Wireless

Go to the "Settings" icon on the main menu. Select "Network Settings."

Go down to "Internet Connection," press "X" and select "Enabled." Go down to "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X." Select "Yes" to ignore the disconnection warning. Select "Easy" and wait for the PS3 to check the network settings.

Select "Wireless" as the connection method. Select "Scan" and wait for the PS3 to scan for networks. Select the name of your wireless network. Use the on-screen keyboard to enter a name for the network or leave it on its default name by pressing "Right" on the analog stick.

Select the type of security used by the router and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the network password. Refer to the person who set up the network if you don't have that information. If the network has no password, select "None."

Press "X" to save the settings. Select "Test Connection." After the test completes, the PS3 will be connected to the LAN. Repeat this process with each PS3 you want to connect to the LAN.
