In recent history, few topics have been met with as much fierce social and political debate as stem cell research. The main reason behind why this is such as heavily contested topic is abortion. To have a productive debate regarding this touchy subject, you must go into the discussion with a non-judgmental and open mind. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Learn how stem cells are harvested because this is where the controversy begins. The majority of stem cells are harvested either from 4- to 5-day old fertilized eggs that are to be discarded from fertility clinics or from aborted fetuses. The debate is fueled by how the stem cells are harvested because pro-lifers believe life begins at conception.
Step2
Recognize valid points on both sides of the argument. Those arguing for stem cell research believe that stem cells may provide cures for incurable diseases. Those against stem cell research argue that harvesting stem cells from aborted fetuses is wrong because they do not believe in abortion.
Step3
Explain why you believe or do not believe in stem cell research. Simply stating that stem cell research is wrong without providing any reasoning for your beliefs does not open any doors for debate. If you believe that stem cell research is wrong because life begins at conception, then explain that to the person with whom you are debating.
Step4
Speak respectfully. Highly controversial subjects such as stem cells and abortion go hand-in-hand with strong personal beliefs. Although you may not agree with the other person's beliefs, you must respect the way they feel in order to have a healthy debate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Know what you are talking about. Read articles or listen to news reports regarding the controversy of stem cell research. This will ensure that you are well-informed when entering a debate about the subject.
  • Don't get personal. Although this debate does revolve around personal, and sometimes religious, beliefs, attacking someone for what they believe will cause the debate to become an argument.
