Fireplace mantels are the focal point of most large living rooms. A new paint job can keep the mantel looking new and fresh, add flair to the space and embellish the fireplace itself. Here are some tips for how to paint a mantel.
Remove everything from the fireplace mantel. Clean off the top of the mantel, including any runners or placemats. Take away any surrounding fireplace equipment, such as fireplace tools or log holders.
2
Strip away any existing finishes on the mantel. Use sandpaper or paint stripper to remove old paint or varnish from the unit. Strip brick fireplace mantels with a chemical paint remover or with a wire brush.
3
Fill in any imperfections or damage with wood putty or caulk. Let this dry and sand to a smooth finish. Wipe down the entire mantel with a damp cloth after this process.
4
Apply a coat of primer to the mantel. Use long, even strokes to the finish of the wood. Start at the top of the mantel and work down the sides. This will provide a suitable surface for painting.
5
Paint the fireplace mantel with a quality oil based paint. Depending on the finish desired, apply more than one coat to achieve that look.
6
Place several coatings of a clear coat polyurethane to the surface of the mantel. This will seal the finish and give a beautiful shine to the painted finish. Clean with a damp rag when needed.
Tips & Warnings
Let the first coat of paint dry completely before putting on a second. Drips and runs may occur if paint is applied over wet paint. This also applies to the polyurethane clear coat.
Distress the new finish for a more rustic weathered appearance.
Wear eye protection, gloves and a respirator for this project.
