Riders of every level can benefit from a riding instructor but only if there is a good fit between rider and instructor. Picking a riding instructor takes time, just like choosing the right horse. You may even have to spend time with a few different instructors before making a decision. Learn how to pick a horse riding instructor by following these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Decide on a riding discipline before choosing a riding instructor. No one instructor can teach you everything, so if you want to ride many different disciplines you will need more than one instructor. For basic riding lessons, decide if you like the Western or English riding style.
Step2
Observe local instructors while they are giving lessons to other riders. Watch more than one lesson, if possible. If you find an instructor you like, observe them on different days teaching different levels of riding. Notice how they treat the riders and horses while teaching.
Step3
Meet with instructors you are interested in. Talk to them about their experience riding and instructing. Tell them your goals and experience and what you would like to learn from them.
Step4
Check out the instructor's own horses. Their horses should be well-behaved and excel in the discipline that the instructor teaches.
Step5
If you want to show or compete, find out about the instructor's competitive history. On what level does she compete? Does she win? How are her students placing?
Step6
Take lessons from the instructor, but don't make a formal decision until you have ridden with a few different instructors. The right instructor can help you become a better rider than you thought possible.
Step7
Compare all of the instructors you are interested in. Compare their experience, teaching methods, personality, facilities and prices. Make a decision based on what you want and your riding level. As you get better, you may want to move to a different instructor.
