At the beginning of the season, the chains on a snow blower should be checked for proper tension. Periodically throughout the season, recheck the chains. Your snow blower will operate more efficiently and safely when you adjust the chain tension. Here are a few tips that can be used on different chains on different models.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Restrict the side movement of the snow blower by adjusting the lower link sway chains.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the slack of the tension on the lower side so that it has 1/4 to 3/8 inch of sway. Definitely retighten the drive chain if the slack exceeds 3/4 inch.

  3. Step 3

Look for a removable link in the chain and take it out. Depending on the amount of slack to be taken up, you may need to buy a half link or offset link.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the roller chain for tightness. If it is slack, adjust the idler sprockets.

  5. Step 5

Check the auger chain on larger snow blowers. Loosen the chain idler and slide it against the chain. You want a deflection of 1/2 inch between the bottom auger sprocket and drive sprocket.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware that chains loosen with use, thus the need to check periodically.
  • A chain with too much slack can cause vibration. This puts excess wear on the chain as well as causing excess noise and shock loading.
  • Some snow blower owners recommend having a very tight chain, but a tight chain puts additional wear on the teeth, sprockets, chain joints and shaft bearings.
