How to Maintain a Spear Gun

Spear guns are built to last under water, but still care must be taken with it every time it is used. Salt water acts as a corrosive and will cause a great deal of damage in just a short amount of time. Keep your spear gun in great shape by getting into the habit of going through short steps of preventive care. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the spear gun with fresh water every time you use it. You want to remove as much salt as you possibly can to prevent corrosion.

    • 2

Look for any damage to the bands, triggers, O-rings, and spear lanyards. If any are damaged, replace them.

    • 3

When you aren't using the spear gun, take off the slings and put them in a plastic bag. Keep them out of light. It's a good idea to actually store them in your refrigerator.

    • 4

Change the gas cartridges if required. If you have a pneumatic spear gun, check to make sure how soon it needs to be re-pressurized.

    • 5

Dispose of any spear shafts that are bent. If you've ever bounced a spear off a rock, you know how easily the tip can be ruined. A ruined tip will eventually bend your shaft which will damage the spear gun's bore. Not to mention, a fired bent shaft can cause injury to the diver.

    • 6

Attach the spear tip with a substance such as lock-tight so it won't come loose. With a safe and long-lasting spear gun, you'll be able to spear fish with it for many years.
