Step 1
Become familiar with the music for string quartets. There are many that span from the 1700's to today.
-
Step 2
Choose to specialize in one particular era; for example the quartets of the classical era, and practice the part for your instrument. If you play violin, learn the parts for first and second violin; if viola, learn the viola part; if cello, learn the cello part.
-
Step 3
Buy quartets that appeal to you on CD and play along with them. Become accomplished at the part for your instrument.
-
Step 4
Audition for the string quartet if one is offered at a school you attend.
-
Step 5
Seek auditions for string quartets in the paper or online.
-
Step 6
Contact the string quartet in the community where you live. Express your interest in joining a quartet. Perhaps they will inform you of upcoming auditions with that quartet or others.
-
Step 7
Create your own string quartet. Choose the era of the music you will play, and post auditions in the paper and online. You can also post notices of auditions at local colleges or music conservatories.
