Fly-fishing in Rocky Mountain National Park is permitted as a hobby sport activity. The serene setting nestled in the forests of Colorado is an ideal place for fishermen to enjoy the beauty of a national park and test their angling skills. Rocky Mountain National Park stocked many of the rivers and tributaries with several species of fish. Here's how to make the most of fly-fishing in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fly-fishing tackle
  • Artificial baits and lures
  • Insect repellent
  • GPS unit
  1. Step 1

Check with local authorities to obtain the proper permissions and licenses. A valid Colorado fishing license is all that is required in many areas. A state park official will discuss regional regulations.

  2. Step 2

Get permission to travel into areas not on official maps or river guides. Many areas are off limits to guests and anglers.

  3. Step 3

Bring fly-fishing tackle for many different fish. The Rocky Mountain National Park stocks rainbow, brown and brook trout. There are areas that see a healthy population of greenback or cutthroat trout.

  4. Step 4

Select a proper bait lure. Live bait is all but excluded from the Rocky Mountain National Park's rivers and lakes. Most areas only permit fishing lures and artificial flies.

  5. Step 5

Determine the catch and release areas of the park. Many rivers such as Adams, Lily and the Roaring are catch and release waters for trout. Consult a guidebook or park staff for correct catch and release locations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to fish in a few different rivers during the trip. Trout are constantly moving and navigate several rivers a day.
  • Take along a handheld global positioning (GPS) unit to help with navigation in and out of rough terrain and to mark favorite fishing locations.
  • Never introduce live bait into the Rocky Mountain National Park waters.
  • Wear sunscreen and insect repellent.
