After working hard all your life, you want your retirement to be as problem-free as possible. To accomplish this, the first thing you need to do is apply for Social Security benefit payments. You may find comfort in knowing that this is not as complicated or difficult as it may seem. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • W-2 or last year's tax return
  • Birth certificate
  • Social security card
  • Proof of citizenship or lawful alien status
  • Discharge military papers
Step1
Review your Social Security Statement. You should receive it approximately three months before your birthday.
Step2
Apply for benefits. You need to apply three months before the date that you want to start receiving the benefit payments. There are three ways that you can do this: by calling toll-free at 1-800-772-1213, online through the Social Security Administration's website, or in person. See our Resources section below for the online address.
Step3
Provide documentation. Have the following documents ready: W-2 or last year's tax return, birth certificate, social security card, proof of citizenship or lawful alien status. If you were in the military, have your military discharge papers ready.
Step4
Decide how you want to receive your benefit payments. You can choose direct deposit or you can receive a monthly check by mail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many people prefer to apply in person at their local Social Security Office to avoid the risk of the documents getting lost in the mail.
  • The funds can be available more quickly if you choose direct deposit. You also eliminate the risk of the check getting lost in the mail.
  • Your monthly payment can be reduced if you apply for benefits at age 62 instead of 67.
