How to Get a Free Dun and Bradstreet File for a Business
Dun and Bradstreet is a business credit reporting agency. If you want to apply for business credit, you will need to request a Dun and Bradstreet number, as it will be asked for on many applications (much in the same way that your Social Security number is requested on personal credit applications).

1
Go to the DNB website. Once there, look for the "Customer Resources" section (the third section underneath the Dun and Bradstreet header) and click on the "Get a D&B D-U-N-S® Number" link (second link down in that section.)
-
2
Search for your company by inputting your company name, city and state into the required fields and clicking "Next." This is a required step that Duns and Bradstreet has you follow to ensure that your company is not already listed in their database before they issue you a new number and create a new file. If one of your creditors reports to Dun and Bradstreet, you may already have a number and file with them and not even know it.

4
Wait for your new Dun and Bradstreet number. You should receive it within 30 business days. If you don't, call a Dun and Bradstreet representative.
