Find an accredited Teaching as a Second Language program. There are many independent schools as well as certification available at Columbia University and the University of Memphis.

Apply and get accepted into a program. Most programs require you have at least a Bachelors degree and be a native English speaker.

  3. Step 3

Fulfill the requirements of the degree program. Outside of tests you will also have to complete a teaching requirement where you will have to teach a class for a set number of hours.

  4. Step 4

Take and pass the certification exam and you will be ready to teach people how to speak English.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a school that offers job placement as part of its program and has a high placement rate. TESL jobs can be very competitive, so if you are in a program that offers assistance then you will have an easier time getting a job.
  • Look at programs that are offered overseas in a country you may want to work. You can get your TESL certification and have a vacation at the same time.
  • Beware of scams. Make sure the school you choose is accredited and reputable. There are a lot of independent schools out there so if you go with one that is not part of a major university you are going to want to do your homework.
