How to Hire a Carpet Installer

While there are a number of places you can purchase your carpet and shop for a deal, you may want to consider hiring your own carpet installer rather than using the store's in-house installers. Carpet salespeople make commission of their referrals and do not have the same vested interest in the job as an independent installer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Ask to see the licenses and insurance of the carpet installer. Ask how much experience he has too. It takes about five years to be recognized as a craftsman. Make sure he has experience in residential carpeting too, as commercial installers follow different practices.
Step2
Call the references the installer provides. Get contacts of jobs he has done 6 months to 1 year prior to your work. Carpet can look great for a couple months, and problems may not show up for that long.
Step3
Get both the estimate and a warranty on the work in writing. Find out whom you will call if you have problems and how accessible the installer will be when you call. Ask if the installer does follow-up himself or sends others.
Step4
Discuss the cleanup and disposal of your old carpet. When you compare quotes, you'll want to get all this information from each installer to make an informed decision. Also, find out if the installer moves furniture or if there is an extra charge for heavier pieces.
Step5
Watch the installer as he measures your home to prepare your quote. You can judge a lot by how thorough he is and how he treats your home.
Step6
Make sure you are comfortable with the installer. Trust your instincts if his demeanor doesn't feel right, or you feel that he is not listening to you closely.
