2. Call the references the installer provides. Get contacts of jobs he has done 6 months to 1 year prior to your work. Carpet can look great for a couple months, and problems may not show up for that long.
3. Get both the estimate and a warranty on the work in writing. Find out whom you will call if you have problems and how accessible the installer will be when you call. Ask if the installer does follow-up himself or sends others.
4. Discuss the cleanup and disposal of your old carpet. When you compare quotes, you'll want to get all this information from each installer to make an informed decision. Also, find out if the installer moves furniture or if there is an extra charge for heavier pieces.
5. Watch the installer as he measures your home to prepare your quote. You can judge a lot by how thorough he is and how he treats your home.
6. Make sure you are comfortable with the installer. Trust your instincts if his demeanor doesn't feel right, or you feel that he is not listening to you closely.
