Receive an education. To become a federal air marshal you need to have at least a high school education. However, having a college education will increase your chances when applying for a position in the federal government. Meet requirements. The qualifications to become a federal air marshal are some of the most competitive of the U.S. federal law enforcement agencies. In most cases you have to be under the age of 40 at the start of your service. It's rare that someone over forty is appointed into the Federal Air Marshal Service. You also must have normal hearing, good color vision, be physically fit, and have a normal EKG.

First, spend time at a gun range. This will improve your marksmanship and this is important when working for the federal government. Second, take defensive tactics courses.
