Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Walk around your neighborhood. You see a lot more and get a better feel for a community by walking in your neighborhood and on the commercial main streets. You'll be surprised at what you may find in the little hole in the wall café or bookstore that doesn't have a website, but offers the best pastry in town.
Step2
Read the local paper. Granted, you may not find the best journalism or the kind of reporting found in bigger city newspapers, but it is the local rags that will fill you in on the local services and community happenings closer to your neighborhood.
Step3
Volunteer by joining a service organization. You will learn a lot about the local community right on the streets or in a board meeting. Service work is a way to give back to society as well as a prime means of networking among your neighbors.
Step4
Follow the local government. Some people find town council meetings to be very entertaining, and they are free to the public. At least follow the rulings of your local government, since it will help you learn about your community and how it affects your own wallet and way of life.
