An above-ground pool is easier to install and much less expensive than an in-ground pool. If you choose to install it yourself be sure to follow the specific instructions that come with your pool. While there will be variations to installation for different pools, they should follow these basic steps.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check with the local building inspector to ensure you're following the correct building codes for your area.

  2. Step 2

Remove sod from the location you've chosen to put your above-ground pool and create a level surface, always matching the lowest level of the ground. The location should be relatively level to begin with and should get plenty of sun on summer days. You may want to add a strong and drainable material to the level surface to provide more support. Crushed stone is recommended.

  3. Step 3

Install patio stones or blocks to support the pool frame. All the posts in the frame should rest on one of these blocks. Make sure they are all level to ensure the best support for your pool.

  4. Step 4

Cover the leveled area with the recommended material (usually some type of sand) to provide a soft smooth base on which to rest the liner. This should be about two inches thick all the way around. This will help keep insects or roots from bulging into the floor of your pool.

  5. Step 5

Assemble the walls as required by the specific pool model. Again, make sure they are level all the way around.

  6. Step 6

Place the beveled cove around the bottom edge of the wall to protect the liner from this sharp edge.

  7. Step 7

Create a 6 inch, 45-degree angle around the bottom edge of the pool with the same type of sand used in Step 4. The 6 inches should be measured from the top of the cove to the bottom of the pool. At this point you should apply a strong grass killer to the sand placed in Step 4, wet it, and pat it down firmly, making a flat smooth surface.

  8. Step 8

Install the liner, making it as smooth as possible.

  9. Step 9

Assemble the remaining parts of the frame to the walls. This step will vary depending on the type of above ground pool you have. After this you can cut the holes needed for the skimmer and the return and connect the filtering system to the pool.

  10. Step 10

    Fill the pool with water.

  11. Step 11

Landscape the area surrounding your new pool as desired.
