1
Check local building codes and obtain the appropriate building permits before you begin digging. These will vary from location to location so check with your local building inspector.
-
2
Choose a location. Build your pool in a level section of your yard that gets sun most of the day. Also consider how much room you'll want for the patio around the pool.
-
-
3
Excavate the area. You'll probably want to hire a backhoe and operator for this step, as it's a huge task. A professional can ensure the proper depth and measurements of the hole, which will vary with each pool.
-
4
Place the side panels around the outer edge of the hole and assemble them in place. You'll also install the steps, skimmer, and other equipment that will be part of the framework at this time. When you're finished assembling check to make sure the frame is level.
-
5
Brace the walls and pour concrete at the base of each brace. This provides extra strength to the walls for backfilling and when the pool is filled with water.
-
6
Backfill dirt around the pool. The ground level should be about two feet lower than the top of the panels.
-
7
Create a smooth floor in the pool. This can be done using sand or a thin coat of concrete and vermiculite depending on the water table in the area. With both materials you'll trowel the bottom to create a smooth surface.
-
8
Install the liner and ensure it is as smooth as possible. This can be done by hanging down into the pool and using a soft bristle broom to smooth it out.
-
9
Hook up the filter, plumbing, and electrical systems needed to run the pool. These requirements will vary with different pools so be sure to read the directions that come with yours.
-
10
Fill the pool with water.
-
11
Install ladders, diving boards, slides, or other equipment you want, using cement to secure these items.
-
12
Allow the dirt around the pool to settle for a couple of weeks before pouring the cement for the patio around the pool.
