A knitted cast on is an easy cast on for beginning knitters since it uses the basics of knitting knowledge. This cast on is also great to use if you have to add stitches to the side of a piece. The name gives the cast on away since it uses the basics of the knit stitch to create stitches.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two knitting needles
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

Create a slip knot. This can be done by wrapping the yarn around two of your fingers. On one hand, hold the end of the yarn with your thumb and middle finger. Wrap the yarn upwards once and then wrap again with the second wrap between the first wrap of yarn and your palm. Reach under the first wrap and pull the second wrap through. Continue to hold the second wrap and let the first slip off your fingers. This will create a slip knot.

  2. Step 2

Place the slip knot on your left hand needle. The tail of the slip knot should be at the farthest away from you hanging at the edge of the knitting with the yarn you will be knitting with at the front.

  3. Step 3

Knit the single stitch on your needle. Slide you right hand needle into the stitch from bottom to top, wrap the yarn counter clockwise around the right hand needle and slip the needle, and yarn, through the original stitch again from top to bottom.

  4. Step 4

Slide the new stitch from your right hand needle to your left. Make sure that the stitch isn't twisted when you transfer it to the left hand needle. The half of the stitch that is at the back of the needle, or facing away from you, should become the half that is on the front section of the needle when it has been properly slipped onto the left hand needle.

  5. Step 5

Continue to knit the stitch at the end of the left hand needle and slipping it from the right hand needle to the left until you have all the stitches that you need for your project.
