An open cast on is ideal when want to add ribbing or an edging to your knitted project once you're through with knitting the project. It is usually best to do this cast on with a different color yarn so it is clear where the cast on is. You will also want to use a yarn with a similar thickness so that the cast on doesn't affect your gauge.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet hook
  • Two colors of yarn
  • Knitting needles
  1. Step 1

Create a slip knot with the yarn that is a different color from the one that you are going to use to make your project. This yarn will be your waste yarn. Do this by wrapping the end of the yarn around two of your fingers once then a second time. The second wrap needs to be between the first and your palm. Then go under the first loop, grab the second loop and pull it through the first loop. Release the first loop and pull and you'll have a slip knot.

  2. Step 2

Crochet the number of stitches that you are going to need for the project. Hold the yarn with your left hand and the crochet hook with your right hand. To make a stitch slip the crochet hook through the slip knot, wrap the hook around the yarn by going in front of the yarn, under the bottom and back up, you'll now have a loop of yarn around the crochet hook. Then simply pull the crochet hook through the slip knot to create another stitch.

  3. Step 3

Pick up the stitches with one of your knitting needles. If you look closely at the chain of crochet stitches, you'll see that one side of the chain looks like little V's lined up and the other has humps along the center of the chain. These humps are what you will want to pick up with your knitting needle.

  4. Step 4

    Knit your project.

  5. Step 5

Pick up the first row of stitches that you made on your project in your main yarn. These are the ones that are right up against the crochet chain. You may want to use a smaller knitting needle to do this to make it easier.

  6. Step 6

Carefully unravel the waste yarn on the edge. Once you have all the original stitches on the knitting needle begin with the last stitch that you crocheted. The crochet should unravel neatly.

  7. Step 7

Add your edge with the stitches now on your knitting needle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to pick up the stitches from the crochet chain neatly so that it is easier to unravel.
