Help a Teenager Make Good Decisions

There's a fine line between wanting to protect your teenager and giving him space to make his own choices. Help your teenager make good decisions by following these few suggestions on establishing ground rules, opening the lines of communication and providing a safe place to hang out.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak clearly to your teenager so that there is no misunderstanding. Instead of being vague about your expectations, be specific when discussing rules and consequences. Try not to say things like, "You'd better put away your dirty clothes, or else." Explain to him, "If you don't put your dirty clothes in the hamper each night, you will not earn your allowance."

Let your teenager know what you value, and express the importance of making healthy decisions. Explain that experimenting with sex and drugs can be dangerous, and give the reasons why you feel it's important he make healthy decisions.

    • 3

Try not to lecture your teenager, or you'll risk him tuning you out. Although your job is to be the responsible parent, you don't have to yell at your teenager to get your point across. Like adults, teenagers respond best when they feel safe and loved. If you feel angry, take a few deep breaths. When you are calm, invite your teenager to sit down with you and explain why he made a foolish decision.

Become involved in your teenager's life by getting to know his friends. Likewise, take the time to talk to them and provide a safe place to hang out. Let your teenager's friends know what your expectations are, and make sure they follow the ground rules when they are in your house.

Give your child a positive outlet in which to get involved. Encourage volunteer work or school-affiliated extracurricular activities. Have your teenager join a youth group at a church where he can be surrounded by other positive role models.
