Step 1
Clear your space. Before you even lift a paint brush, you need to remove all wall hangings from the wall and move all furnishings out of the room. If you have furniture pieces that are too big to move, place them in the center of the room with a drop cloth over them to keep them protected.
-
Step 2
Repair the walls before starting to paint. You will want your walls to be as clean and smooth as possible for a great finish. To accomplish this, fill any nail holes with spackle and sand. Do the same with any cracks you find in the old finish.
-
Step 3
Wash your walls. No one likes this step, but it's essential if you want to apply as few coats as possible. By taking the time to wash the walls, you'll remove all dust, dirt and grease that have accumulated over the years. The surface will be much more ready to receive the paint.
-
Step 4
Cover your floors. You can protect your carpets and hard woods either with drop cloths you can buy at a paint store or with plain old sheets. Overlap the edges and tape the outer sides to the baseboards to prevent any paint from seeping through.
-
Step 5
Load your brushes and rollers correctly. When using paint brushes, dip the brush an inch or two into the paint can and gently tap the brush against the inside rim of the can. For paint rollers, fill the pan with paint and roll about a quarter of the way into the paint, and roll along the grooves of the pan. Repeat the process, only this time go about halfway into the paint.
-
Step 6
Paint the letter "M" onto the wall. To achieve maximum coverage, use your roller to begin painting the wall with the letter "M." Reload your roller and paint over the "M" horizontally. Repeat as necessary to cover the walls.
-
Step 7
Preserve your painting tools overnight. When a room takes longer than one day to get done, you'll need to store your paint brushes and rollers so that they don't harden. Wrap them in a plastic bag and then wrap the plastic bag in aluminum foil and place it in the freezer. Thaw it the next day and resume your job.
