Metal nail files are durable, widely available and simple to use. Using any type of nail file is easy, but there are a few things you need to remember while filing your nails to prevent them from cracking and breaking.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Metal nail file
  1. Step 1

Even out your fingernails. Once your nails are in the shape your desire, use a metal nail file to smooth out the rough edges of your fingernails.

  2. Step 2

Go in one direction. When you begin filing your nails, be sure to file each side of the nail in one direction, either up or down. Filing your nails in two directions, with a sawing motion will damage the nail and cause it to crack and break.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the metal nail file down periodically. As you file your nails, the surface of the nail file may form a layer of build-up, causing the metal nail file to be less effective. Wipe it off periodically to ensure that the surface of the metal nail file is as effective as possible.

  4. Step 4

Smooth out your toenails. Toenails are often stronger and thicker than fingernails so metal nail files are effective on toenails because they are sturdy and durable. Start filing your toes in one direction just as you would for your fingernails to prevent breakage.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your nails are really out of shape, use an emery board first to get them into the shape your desire. Emery boards shape nails faster then metal nail files because the surface is more rough.
  • Keep your artificial nails looking good. Metal nail files are strong enough to use on artificial nails. If you have them and have decided you want them to be a little shorter, use a metal nail file to file them down to the size you desire.
  • Clean your metal nail file after each use. Wash the metal nail file in warm soapy water and dry it off thoroughly to keep it bacteria free.
  • Don't use someone else's metal nail file. You can end up getting a fungal infection if that person's nail file is not clean.
  • Don't file too fast. Most metal nail files have a pointed tip, if you file to fast you could hurt yourself.
