Below that beautiful wood veneer of laminate flooring lies an underlayment. Installing underlayment below the laminate flooring helps to deaden the sound in the room and adds a moisture barrier to guard against warping of the floor. Different types and thicknesses exist, but all are easy to install.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Underlayment
  • Utility knife
  • Tape
  1. Step 1

Measure the floor area that you will be covering to determine how much underlayment is needed. Underlayment for laminate flooring comes in rolls that generally cover 100 square feet.

  2. Step 2

Determine what kind of underlay you want to use. Some manufacturers make their own underlayment, while home-supply stores may carry a variety. Store employees can explain which underlayment has better sound-deadening qualities.

  3. Step 3

Ensure that the subfloor is dry before you put the underlayment over it. Unroll the underlayment on the subfloor. Use a utility knife to cut off the roll at the wall.

  4. Step 4

Put down the first rows of laminate flooring, if the underlayment is thin and likely to shift if you cover the whole floor first with underlayment. If it's too thick to shift and you want to cover the whole floor at once, go to Step 6.

  5. Step 5

Unroll the next section of underlayment and cut it with a utility knife at the wall.

  6. Step 6

Tape the sections together with carpet tape.

  7. Step 7

Continue Steps 4 to 7 until the entire floor is covered. Then install the laminate flooring.
