  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Spray acrylic sealer
  • Nail
  • Hammer
  • Potting soil
  • Plants or seeds
  1. Step 1

Wash the old coffee cans to remove old coffee grounds and oils. Remove the labels and any glue that remains on the exterior. Let the cans air-dry.

  2. Step 2

Paint the coffee cans in a variety of colors. Each coffee can may have a different design, or you can make them all the same. Let the paint dry. Give the cans a second coat of paint, if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Add embellishments. You may want to rubber stamp designs on the painted cans. You can decoupage artwork on them. Using crackle paints is another option. Be creative.

  4. Step 4

Spray the cans with a coat of the clear, acrylic sealer. Let it dry. If the can is going to be outdoors, spray it with a second coat of the sealer.

  5. Step 5

Poke holes with a 3-inch nail in the bottom of the coffee cans you plan to use outside. If you are going to use the cans indoors, put some rocks in the bottom of them to allow for drainage. Or, you can poke holes in the indoor cans and place the cans on a drainage tray.

  6. Step 6

Fill the cans with good quality potting soil. Plant your seeds or plants inside the can. As you create your container garden, realize that a big plants need a large coffee can. Smaller herbs can get by in a smaller container.
