How to Stitch a Rosette of Thorns
The Rosette of Thorns stitch is an embroidery technique that provides a beautiful crown effect with a simple variation of the buttonhole stitch. The Rosette of Thorns can be done along a straight line or in a circle with the crowns pointing either inward or fanning out, and can be embellished with beads or knots along the line.

1
Stitch an initial buttonhole stitch by imagining two parallel lines on the fabric. Pull the thread out on the lower line, insert the needle into the upper line and make a stitch straight downward, and keep the working thread under the point of the needle so that the thread forms a loop when you pull the stitch.
-
2
Verify that your buttonhole stitch is correct by making sure that it consists of a series of parallel stitches linked by loops of thread running in a continuous line along the bottom of the stitches.

3
Create the Rosette of Thorns by grouping five buttonhole stitches together as if the bottoms of the stitches have been drawn together while the tops of the stitches remain apart. The result is a crown shape with stitches fanning out rather than a row of parallel vertical stitches.
-
4
Stitch one long buttonhole stitch to move on to the next Rosette of Thorns and repeat the technique. You may gradually shape the line to create a ring of stitches with the crowns either pointing inward or fanning outward like rays.

5
Add beads or knots for embellishment. You can place beads either on the points of the crowns themselves or on the buttonhole stitches linking the crowns. Similarly, knots may be added wherever you like for a creative touch and a more finished look.
