The buttonhole wheel stitch, also known as the wheel stitch and buttonhole rings, is a stitch where you use buttonhole stitches to create a circle. The buttonhole wheel stitch can be used to make flowers, spider webs or decorative filling for your next embroidery project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a fabric marking pen to mark the center of your buttonhole wheel. Mark the outer circle, also, where the spokes of the buttonhole wheel will reach out to before beginning your stitch.

  2. Step 2

Thread your tapestry needle and tie a knot at the end of the working thread so the thread will be secure once you start stitching.

  3. Step 3

Begin in the center by making a buttonhole stitch (also called a blanket stitch) that comes from the center of the wheel toward the outer circle that you marked on the fabric. Working this way will make sure that the knots of the stitches are on the outside of the circle.

  4. Step 4

Work your way around the circle, completing more buttonhole stitches until you have completed all the way around the circle. You can choose to have the stitches flush against each other or you can leave an equal distance of space between the stitches.

  5. Step 5

Secure the thread at the back of the thread. Snip the thread with scissors to finish the buttonhole wheel stitch.
