The Drizzle stitch is one of many variations of the cast-on stitch, and a beautiful and useful Brazilian embroidery technique. The drizzle stitch is essentially a cast-on buttonhole stitch that is only attached at one end. This stitch is a fun addition to any embroidery project and useful for creating flowers, seaweed or anemones.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric and hoop or frame
  • Rayon thread (or any other type of thread)
  • Milliner's needle or darner
  1. Step 1

Stretch your fabric over a hoop or frame, taking care to make it taut.

  2. Step 2

Use a milliner's needle or a darner as your needle, because having the eye and the diameter of the needle be roughly the same size makes this technique much easier.

  3. Step 3

Use rayon thread to be true to Brazilian tradition, although any thread will work.

  4. Step 4

Pull the needle up through the fabric, making just part of a stitch. Stop before you have pulled the needle all the way out of the fabric.

  5. Step 5

Remove the thread from the needle while leaving the needle in the fabric.

  6. Step 6

Pick up the thread and twist it to make a small loop. Place this loop over the needle to create your first cast-on.

  7. Step 7

Repeat with multiple cast-ons, making at least six or as many as you like for larger spirals. Keep the cast-ons even and close to one another.

  8. Step 8

Finish the stitch when you have as many cast-ons as you want by rethreading the needle and pulling it through the fabric. The needle should leave behind a spiral of cast-ons that comes out of the fabric and is free on one end.
